The Rock Fort |

The Rockfort Temple is Trichy’s most famous landmark. This magnificent temple is dedicated to Lord Siva, his consort Parvathi and Lord Ganesha. Built on an 83m high rock that dates back to 3800 million years ,it offers a spectacular view of the city .Built by the Pallavas, this was later fortified by the Nayaks. Climbing up the 437 steps cut into the rock face is a picturesque and spiritual experience as several small shrines dot the way. |

Srirangam Temple |

The famous Srirangam Temple is a marvel of South Indian architecture and spread over an astounding 2.5 sq.kms with 21 huge gopurams. The temple was built between the 14th and 17th centuries on an island in the Cauvery. It boasts of the world’s largest temple tower,a mammoth 13-tiered, 72 mt marvel! It is known as the Raja Gopuram and has a gleaming golden dome which is plated with pure gold leaves! |

Thiruvanaikaval Temple |

This ancient Tiruvanaikkaval or Jambukeswarar temple was built in the 1st Century B.C. under a jambu tree and is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Parvati. Its rare architectural style features a twin layer of pillars in the temple tank. The lingam here is partially submerged by water representing God-incarnate. An elephant was believed to be the first to have worshipped Lord Siva here.Later it was patronized by the Chola, Pandya, Hoysala and Madurai Nayak Kings. |

In this village are the remains of 2nd century B.C.Jain cave temple. Fresco paintings reminiscent of Ajanta adorn the walls. Many of them are typical of the 9th century Pandyan period and include exquisitely detailed pictures of animals, fish, ducks, people gathering lotuses from a pond and two dancing figures. There are also inscriptions dating back to the 9th and 10th centuries. |

Mukkombu is a wonderful picnic spot. It is situated 18 kms away from Trichy. Constructed in the 19th century, across the Kollidam, this dam is about 658 mt long and has been forced into three sections instead of one long stretch because of the shape of the island. |

Kallanai - Grand Anaicut |

It is situated 24 kms away from Trichy. The Kallanai, also known as the Grand Anaicut, is an ancient dam in Tamil Nadu. The Grand Anaicut built by Karikalan Chola in the 2nd century A.D. The Kallanai is a massive dam of unhewn stone, 329 meters long and 20 meters wide, across the main stream of the Cauvery. The purpose of the dam was to divert the waters of the Cauvery across the fertile Delta region for irrigation via canals. This is a beautiful picnic spot. |
